TONI&GUY Style Menu Simplifies Your Holiday Glam

TONI&GUY introduces Style Menu just in time for the 2017 Holiday! This style option trio is guaranteed to simplify your style needs this holiday party season, and at only $45 it’s a deal you can’t pass up.

I attended a Style Menu pre-view blogger event at the Hillcrest location in Dallas, TX. Style Menu options are now available at TONI&GUY locations! The event was held on a Thursday evening, offering Style Menu services and mini-makeovers. We showed up ready to work and get our blog on, but clearly the day was close to its end. But DJ So4kis made the party rock as we enjoyed an assortment of delectables and champagne while waiting to be serviced. We walked in day-long tired and walked out refreshed and ready to paint the town -even on a week night!

Style Menu

Style Menu offers Socialite Sleek, Boho Chic and Bombshell Blowout as styling options.

T&G National Creative Technical Director, Samantha Finley introducing Style Menu

Boho Chic

Bombshell Blowout

Style Menu’s Diversity

I kind of shot myself in the foot in this for this event. I showed up with a full beat and I have locs. In my experience, when stylists aren’t familiar with Afro hair, in combination with locs, things get a little awkward. I was disheartened that no service was offered to me for hair. The stylist weren’t prepared for locs that night, but they rocked two other afro textured frocks. The salon provided wash, blow dry and flat ironing services for relaxed and loose natural hair. Both ladies were pleased with their results.

Séxūal By Michel Germain

Séxūal by Michel Germain was founded on love and is a romantic fragrance, frequently referred to as, “A love note in a bottle.”

Michel Germain

Michel Germain, a French-Canadian Perfumer for more than 25 years, known for his prestigious fragrances. Germain credits the sustainability of his brand to creating a storyline that stands out and does something that no one has ever done. When shopping for a fragrance you want compliments. Michel Germain Parfums wants you to get noticed and asked what you’re wearing!

The Pop-up

I had the pleasure of co-hosting the Séxūal by Michel Germain Pop-up at Macy’s in NorthPark Center Mall in Dallas, Texas on October 21st.

Attendees enjoyed treats, and detailed information about the brand  and the Séxūal line by a Michel Germain Account Executive.

Séxūal

“I haven’t found a fragrance that makes me feel confident. I haven’t found a fragrance that lasts and I haven’t found a fragrance that makes me feel like i’m the only women in the world.” -Norma germain

Inspired by a comment from his wife, Norma, Séxūal by Michel Germain features eight fragrances in total. Four Women’s fragrances: Tendre, Paris, Sugar and Noir. And four for Men’s fragrances:Tendre Pour Homme, Paris Pour Homme, Pour Homme and Noir Pour Homme.

But what goes into making a fragrance that makes a women feel like the only women in the world? This sent Germain on a five year quest through France, Africa and the North East for the perfect notes needed to create a fragrance that would do all those things. Ultimately creating Séxūal, a fragrance that exudes romance. MG Account Exec explains that, “In all Séxūal fragrances there is a hidden note, an aphrodisiac. It invites closeness. It invites romance, hugs, and kisses guaranteed. That is what makes this frangrance so unique. They are also oil based, the natural oils blend with your body chemistry and creates your own signature fragrance.

So what happens when you wear the Séxūal? It’s not, ‘oh, you’re wearing this, or are you wearing that? The question becomes, ‘oh my goodness miss! What is that that you’re wearing?’ They can’t identify the scent, because you’ve just created your own signature fragrance through the natural oils, through the aphrodisiacs. That’s why you want to own Séxūal!”

Simple Autumn Glow

Fall is my favorite season. I love everything about it, from crisp air, to chilled breezes, to snuggling up with my boo next to a fire, to wrapping up in a plush blanket with a book and let my imagination run wild. Another thing that I love about Fall is the fashion, swraters, turtle necks, pea coats, booties, boots, gloves, hat and scarves all excite me! I love the breathtaking  mixture of rich orange, red and brown tones that the tree paint the sky with during Fall. I love Fall trend makeup as well!

Today’s simple Autumn Glow look with a burnt orange lip is affordable and easy to recreate.

  • Foundation: NYX Total Control Liquid Foundation (Cappuccino)
  • Concealer: NYX Gotcha Covered Concealer (Golden)
  • Contour & Blush: NYX Cheek Contour Duo Palette (Wine & Dine)
  • Brow: MAC eye brow pencil (Spiked)
  • Top Lash Line:Lancôme Grandiose (Matte Noir)

More Locs!

General Loc Maintenance

Wearing locs is great, and one of the best things about wearing them is low maintenance! When I say low maintenance, I mean almost no maintenance. I get my roots interlocked (retightened) every six weeks, and try to wash my hair every ten to fifteen days. I may miss a wash day here and there, but I ensure to have my retightening done on a regular basis. Another low maintenance perk is product usage.  Locs can be maintained with shampoo, water and oil  90% of the time.

Mature, Color Treated Loc Maintenance

I suffered a devastating experience with breakage (due to low iron) in 2015 when I colored my hair just before discovering I was pregnant with my second child. I haven’t given up on color, but I have started to include products to help strengthen and maintain moisture in my locs.

So far, all of the products that I’ve used have been for loose natural hair. Both of my daughters have loose natural hair, so their haircare products are easily acessible. And while locs are a form of natural hair, they aren’t loose strands of hair, and mine are colored treated, so there are some products that can work for me and others that simply won’t.

Even though I’ve branched out and added some additional products to my routine, my scalp still felt dry and itchy, and my locs still looked dry and frizzy.

More Life with More Locs

I finally got my hand on a brand that I’ve had my eye on for a while, MORE LOCS! The first things that I immediately noticed about my hair was the SHINE! After using the product for about a week -OMG! Like, for real!

More Loc debuted earlier this year (2017), the line features over ten products made to give your locs More moisture, More shine, More growth! Because one of my biggest scalp and hair issues is dryness, I selected two items to help me with that.

scalp nourish

PC: @ishagainesphoto

The Scalp Nourish oil feels like heaven on my scalp! I like that it’s not as thick and heavy as some other oils that I’ve used in the past. It’s easy to distribute, it absorbs into my scalp and locs, and it smells like tropical heaven!

white tea moisture mist

PC: @ishagainesphoto

I use the White Tea Moisture Mist daily. It adds moisture to my locs that I can see, and feel when I touch my hair. My locs feel less brittle and the added moisture brought more life into the color of my locs.

The products didn’t just sit on top of my hair nor did it absorb into non-existence like I’d never used it. My scalp and locs feel nourished and moisturized. Not only does my hair and scalp look better, the added moisture has also helped eliminate some of the frizziness I was experiencing with my locs.

More Locs offers products ranging from cleansers to oils and serums. Find out more about More Locs on Instagram at  @More_locs.  Next on my list of things to try from More Locs is the Herbal Cleanse (shampoo) and Loc Silk (conditioner). Have you experienced More Locs? Tell me your favorite product within the line and why you love it!

M.I.L.F.

Never in my young adult life did I EVER imagine being sexually empowered and secure enough in my femininity to hit M.I.L.F. status. But here I am, “HEY GIRL!”  And yes, the euphemism may have some of you clutching pearls and judging. But I’ve birthed two children and this body has been through some things; ain’t nothing wrong feeling great about looking good!

Motherhood is an experience like no other. I wouldn’t trade it for the world -well, I wouldn’t trade parts of it. Motherhood is the most instinctually selfless process humanly possible. Understand that most days are not pretty, there simply isn’t time for it all.

And because we are women and much is expected and required of us, it’s easy for us to lose anything we’ve ever known about ourselves when we become a mothers. Add marriage and a job to that equation, and you will unknowingly find yourself stretched as thin as ice. Your days start to run together and life passes you by.

The Hubs and I enjoying date night.

Just like the weather, we go through seasons in our lives. It’s our job to learn how to best navigate through life during each of those seasons. Once we learn how to seamlessly adjust to change, things start looking up. I believe it is true that, “with age comes wisdom.” Settling into this crazy, sexy, cool life that I’ve created for myself and some days are a struggle. I’m not too proud to admit that, but when I’m on, I’m on and it’s so refreshing.

P.H.A.T. (Pretty Hot and Tempting) if I do say so myself.

Self-care is all the rage now days and something that I believe in wholeheartedly. It helps me stay focused and at at my best. In today’s society, we allocate the majority of our time to our to-do list leaving little time for rest and relaxation. That can be problematic. As a mother of two, full-time employee, blogger, beauty expert, freelance writer who is married to a high school athletic coach, I have to take “Me-Time” whenever and however I can get it. Some of the ways I sneak in time for self-care are:

Play in makeup – Little girls aren’t the only ones who love to see themselves dolled up. Playing in makeup is good for practicing  applying your favorite looks. It can help you get used to seeing yourself in colors you may normally not wear, and it’s a self-esteem booster.

Have sex -I’m talking about the sex that YOU like. What you like, how you like it and for how long. It’s your world, squirrel! Have the kind of sex that blows your mind and makes you roll over butt-naked, smiling so hard that you have to hide your face in the sheets so your partner doesn’t witness you melting inside.

Working Out -When my schedule allows, I hit the gym and work up a good sweat. Working out helps to relieve stress and tension, and it also helps maintain weight, build muscle and it’s an overall health benefit.

Spa Treatments -A facial, Swedish massage, manicure and pedicure are the ultimate in self-care. But, they can be pricy so on to the next!

Home Spa Treatments -My Toxin-Free facial is relaxing, affordable and will leave your skin feeling silly smooth.

Sitting in silence –I’m not often afforded the opportunity to have the house (or any space) to myself. When those occasions present themselves, I sit in silence. No TV, no radio, and sometimes no cell phone or any other electronic device.

Go out –Meet your girls, go to brunch, go shopping, go to an empowerment event, go dancing. Do whatever makes your heart smile -and be sure to laugh and take pictures while you’re doing it.

When I make sure to take time for self-care it shows! My family and friends notice, but most of all, my husband notices. And trust, when I’m top of my game, he reminds me often. After all, he reaps  the benefits  from it!

Hair Extravaganza at The Texas Intern’l Hair & Trade Show

I attended my first Texas Hair Shows’ International Hair Show, the Texas International Hair and Trade Show, this year. And I have to admit that I must have been living under a rock for the last sixteen years, because the show was amazing! I’ve attended hair expos in the past, so I had a general idea of what to expect as far as the set up, vendor booths, and class breakouts. But I had absolutely no clue what to expect nor what I was in store for during the America’s Next Top Stylist Competition/Hair Battle and other competitions!

favorite finds

From classes, to live demos,  to vendors, if you have any interest in the beauty industry there was something there to benefit you. The exhibition hall hosted a variety of vendors, a main stage, and Barber’s Island; a stage set exclusively for barbers to showcase their work live on stage! The vendors ranged from hair & body product manufacturers to jewelry and fashion. Mocca Cosmetics and Pretty Girl Pillow were in the house. I also spotted all natural, organic and handmade products from Like Second Nature and Unique & Natural!

let’s get it started

As the vendors shut down for the night, the crowd shifted to the ballroom of the convention center and the mood changed drastically. The lights were low, the music was bumping, and the stage was set center to two large projection screens. K104’s Dede McGuire of DeDe in the Morning and actor/model, heartthrob, Christian Keyes opened the show and introduced the opening act, Dooney da Barber.

The performance was followed by the presentation of the Ultimate Groomer Award. Diana Fowlks crowned, or better you could say cloaked, Marcus (Tipp) Mitchell  with an Ultimate Groomer bomber jacket! Up next were the Souljahs Steppers. These young men killed their performance, and had a cheering squad like no other!

Our hosts for the evening were the beautiful Michelle Barber, and Glynn Jackson. Glynn kept me in stitches with quick-witted, comical antics throughout the night. The battle was a fist-pumping, edge of your seat, you betta work, yaaasssss type of production. The pressure was on, as the contestants were first critiqued by Tracy Jones, Anita Hawkins, and KC Fox. Then judged by a host of industry giants: Zerlene Rogers, Keya Neal, Dave Raye, Hair Majesty, and Texas T.

I’ve seen hair battles on TV before, but being in the room and feeling the energy of this show was amazing. I loved every minute of it!

There were twelve creative and innovative competitors with industry experience ranging from five to twenty-plus years, all competing for a Grand Prize of five thousand dollars! Each stylist showcased their skills through themed performances ranging from African Safari’s to The Great Gatsby. I had a great time the entire time, and as the millennials would say, “It was LIT AF!”

This year’s Grand Prize winner was Toni Ancher from Spoil ‘Em Rotten salon in Waco, Texas. Toni’s Toy Story Hair Tale brought down the house! It was colorful, had insane energy, and she showed off her skills from natural to fantasy hairstyles.  Toni left us in awe -she shut it down!

Loc Love

Sunday night’s festivities were fun, fully of energy and long, but I couldn’t miss Monday’s Loc Competition and I didn’t.  All five contestants had dope loc-styles. I’m always delighted to see locs on a platform showcasing their versatility and beauty.

Beautiful Braids

And while everyone isn’t quite ready for the commitment required for locs, we can all get down with braids and corn rows! The braid competition was fit for a queen, the styles were majestic mixed with some ‘around the way’ vibes.

I also had the opportunity to see the Fantasy Hair Competition and the Cosmetology School Competition. Another display of talent and innovation that left me wowed.

All I can say is that I’m kicking myself for all the other shows that I missed. This may have been my first time attending the Texas International Hair Show, but it will not be my last! Follow Texas Hair Shows on Facebook and Instagram to keep up with what’s happening next!

The Black Bridal Experience Fashion Show

Our Weddings Magazine is a bridal lifestyle magazine that excluIsively promotes the Black bride and the Black groom. Its Publisher, Ivy McCain (BLI Publishing) saw a need for the uplifting of Black love and marriageafter hearing several youth state that Black people don’t get married. McQuain immediately began working to create a vehicle to remind the world that Black marriages and Black love is real and a staple in the community across the world. She put out a call to action and created a team of industry professionals to help her execute the vision from the very first issue. Janean Wadley, editor and owner of Forever Yes Weddings, and Shellye Lyons, social media director and owner of Your Media Girl have worked tirelessly since day one. Our Weddings Magazine initially released a sneak peak issue in Southern Dallas County Magazine in its June 2014 issue and later debuted full independent issues in June 2015.

Our Weddings exclusively showcases Black love and community, which sets it apart from the rest. Our Weddings is providing tangible proof that our daughters and sons have every right to  vision love and nuputals on grand scale. They are disapproving the stereotype that “Black people don’t get married” and that, Black people, as any other socio-economical class are more than a troth of baby mamas and baby daddies.

Not only does Our Weddings exclusively showcase Black couples and weddings, it promotes Black designers, event planners, and vendors within the wedding industry.  Our Weddings celebrated its one year anniversary in June 2016 by hosting its contributors to brides-to-be at the Hilton Inn in Duncanville. This year McQuain and her team decided to make the event larger and highlight more Black wedding vendors; thus The Black Bridal Experience, a two-day showcase of designer wedding fashion, wedding planners, and vendors. The extravaganza was held at the Manderley in DeSoto, Texas and was on Friday, June 23 through Saturday, June 24.

I had the pleasure The Black Bridal Experience Fashion Show. It was exquisite and oh-so fabulous! Backstage prep filled me with excitement and anticipation for the show to start. Once the show started, I fell in love with being in love all over again. By the time the show was over,  I’d decided on a 10 year vowel renewal, picked a location, decided on my dress, bridesmaids and junior bride dresses! Wadley did an amazing job ensuring everything ran smoothly and everyone was well taken care of.

Designs by @masterpiece_boutique_ , @thefashionopera@faith.diva, @martaruizdesigns, @whiteweddingworkroom, and @pantorabridal from Brooklyn, New York. ripped the runway. The gowns featured in this show were the embodiment of Queening and absolutely stunning.

Backstage Preperations

Hair whipping and face painting are a must for the runway.

Designers busy fitting the best look on each model, ensuring perfection and adding finishing touches  up until the very last second – it’s a beautiful storm to stand back and watch.

As the dust begins to settle, attention is given to even the slightest details and there’s just enough time snap a few pictures before showtime!

Showtime

The room was was dim, with the spotlight  focused on the runway. We sat in anticipation for the show to start, and when it did the room filled with ooh’s and ahh’s. The ladies moved strategically,  and with grace and elegance.

The after party!

Following the show designer @stephengoudeau displayed four breath taking gowns in the courtyard, and VIP guests spoke one-on-one with the designers while enjoying light hor d’evour’s and cocktails.

More details about The Black Bridal Experience weekend will be in the next issue of Our Weddings Magazine. If you are a bride, know a bride, or are dreaming of being a bride and find yourself coming up short on  wedding inspiration that speaks to your inner Queen, then subscribe to Our Weddings Magazine and be sure to follow on Instagram and Facebook!

Pretty Girl Pillow

Pretty Girl Pillow, curated and founded by Ashley Turner in April 2017. Yes, girl April! Yes, girl it’s only June, but, when God puts a fabulous, innovative new product on your heart you do what He says, and get it on the market!

it was all a dream

Pretty Girl Pillow is literally a dream come true for its founder and curator, Ashley Turner. The inspiration came in a dream. Like most of us, Ashley has grown tired of spending so much money on maintenance just to end up having time, money, and efforts wasted by the next day from sleeping on traditional pillows.

out with the old

Traditional pillows smash, cause breakage, and absorb oils from the hair. They damage eyelash extensions, decrease extensions or tabs. Pretty Girl Pillow is a custom shaped satin covered cushion that preserves your pretty while you sleep. Get a full night’s sleep without compromising your hair, eyelash extensions, or comfort level.

in with the new

The PGP has a satin cover which is designed to accommodate your neck and shoulder areas. The pillow’s design props you up so you’re not resting on the bed allowing you to get a full night’s rest. PGP is a custom, handmade, U-shaped pillow. It has a removable cover, and washable assembly (wash on cold, dry on low).

It is a little bigger than a travel pillow, but still small enough to travel with, and comes with a tote for storage. You can sleep on either side of it, and it’s made to accommodate side and back sleepers. It can also be manipulated to your desires.

It comes in six colors: Serenity (Teal), Tangy (Coral), Royalty (Purple), Fiyah (Red), Candi (Pink), and Stormy (Black), and retails for $39.99.

Within one month of her visionary dream, Pretty Girl Pillow had been designed and on the assembly line. In less than two months, PGP launched and is now available for purchase -no games played, and no time wasted.

love it

I love the feel of satin against my skin, and the texture and weight of the pillow are heavenly. As a naturalista, loc wearer, the pillow helps to preserve moisture by not stripping and absorbing all the oils from my hair. It also helps in preventing lint from getting stuck in my locs.

I spend a lot of time lounging at home, and use my PGP throughout the day as well. I usually walk in and immediately throw my hair into a ponytail, or throw on my bonnet. Sexy, right? With my PGP I’m able to leave my hair down and uncovered while relaxing. PGP takes snuggling up with a good book up a notch. It’s a great head rest, and allows me to be comfy and cute. I’ve caught my husband lounging with my PGP more times than he’ll want me to disclose.

While we’re on the topic of husbands and significant others, here is a little nugget for those of you who may be curious. Yes, girl you can use it for THAT too! It’s designed to accommodate your neck and shoulder area, won’t smash your hair, and won’t damage your lashes. Got it? No? Then I’ll be blunt. Use it during sex, it’s great (thank Ashley later)!

Another one of my best experiences with PGP happened the night I had my hair rolled on perm-rods. I had over sixty rollers in my hair, and the plan was to wear them overnight. PGP came through! Of course, the bottom row of rollers were a pain, but this was my first experience sleeping in perm-rods that didn’t end with me getting little to no sleep.

I use my PGP every night. So much so, that it also serves as a decorative pillow on my bed when not in use, and my children know that when I say, “Go get my pillow.”  that I want my PGP.

The Launch!

The Pretty Girl Pillow launch party took place on June 3rd 2017 at The Beauty Lab Salon in Arlington Texas. Light hors d’oeuvres were served. Terelyn Freeney kept the cocktails rolling, and we mingled and grooved to the sounds formulated by Dallas DJ’s, DJ Madd Scientist and DJ 50 Grand.

Being in the house for the PGP launch came with perks! Upon entry, guests received tickets that landed grand prizes in the laps of two lucky winners. Angela Bell won a Pretty Girl Pillow, and Zerontrea McCullough won 6 months of credit repair from BK Credit Consultants.

Lady Jade was also in the building, showing support, and mixing and mingling it up with the crowd.

Pretty Girl Pillow will definitely pique your interest when you see it online, but seeing, touching, feeling, and experiencing Pretty Girl Pillow in person is unmatched.

Bonnets were being ditched left and right, and Pretty Girl Pillows were flying off the shelf.

Great product, grand prizes, good music and good company are always a great time. If you missed the launch party, do not fret! Pretty Girl Pillow is available at www.prettygirlpillow.com and you can stay in-the-know with Pretty Girl Pillow on Instagram @prettygirlpillow.

The 2017 Extreme Prom Makeover Experience – Studio 21 Salon!

Every girl deserves a day to feel like a princess. To be made the center of attention. To sit in all anxiousness as the curling wands spin and the powder puffs, digesting the sound wisps, ticks and clicks of the magic that happens in those very moments. 10 all-deserving, scintillating young women won an extreme prom makeover for their Senior Prom, sponsored by Project 16 DFW, Studio 21 Salons, and Lil Lizzie’s Foundation.

Terrific Two

Studio 21 is celebrating their two-year anniversary this year, and the series of events is nothing less than “You Should Be Here!” In proper order, the salon kicked off the chain of events by giving back, partnering with Project 16 and Lil Lizzie’s Foundation to make a dream come true for 10 high school seniors by providing hair, makeup, and a photoshoot for prom! We are bringing you a behind the scenes look at day that will go down as no less than a day dreams are made of for Ivory, Dominique, Nayeli, Nautica, Ajah, Aaliyah, Tamya, I’yonna, and Jasaja.

Anticipation filled the room as early as 8am as the girls arrived and things started rolling.

There were side conversations going on, music playing in the background, and refreshments to boot. Coffee was the cocktail of the hour in the preparation for the day’s events, and  organization and teamwork played a major role in the success of this project. The plan was in place, stations were set and the team showed up READY!

Hair

The girls preselected their styles on their shopping day,so the curling irons were hot  and the stylist best equipped to curate their requests were assigned to them. Robin “Honey” George @honeygeorgehair, Felicia “Marcel Queen” Green @texastylistfeliciagreen, and Phylice “Lady Silk” Teamer @anointedhands25 chopped and whirled those tresses into bouncing, flowing, exotic slays.

For the Love of Honey!
Marcel Queen in the building!
Lady Silk, need I say more?

Makeup

The makeup artists marched in focused with their makeup kits in tow.Watching them set up made me feel like a unicorn in fairy tale land. The girls were encouraged to “go for it!”, and no games were played. Amiya @studio21mua, Joanna @fernormfaces, Valerie @lipstickcurlsstudio, and Fai @faschion.makeup painted and served face, hunty!

Mother Jade

Project 16 is clearly Lady Jade’s @ladyjade104 baby. She set it out for those babies, y’all! No detail was untouched. Lil Lizzies provided the beautiful gowns, shoes and accessories that adorned each girl. The young ladies were able to pick their looks from head to toe. I’m not sure if there is any sequin or sparkle left in DFW, cause this even was blinged out! DJ Khaled’s Shining comes to mind when I think of it all.

The creating the set

Once hair and makeup were done and the girls were dressed, it was time for one of the most anticipated parts of the day, the photo shoot! Let me start by saying that this fabulous backdrop was made, byhand, by Alyson Collins. She inflated every balloon, then strategically placed them along the wall like a cascading ray of sunshine and lollipops. I seriously wanted to go home, put on a sparkly gown and come back for my own photo op.

Lights, camera, action!

Studio 21 Media is a force to be reckoned with! Behind the scene photos were taken by John Carter @jcvision_video, and there were three photo stations set; a headshot station with photos by Tydus Cleveland @obey_tytuswayne, the glam spot with photos by Daniel Wheat @d_wheat and outside photos by William Washington @extremeworksstudio. Talk about loving your craft and getting the shot! The best part was seeing them encourage one another and admiring each others shots.

The event came to a close with all the girls center stage, jamming out to a group photo shot. The room was full of love, smiles, and  tears of joy. The girls were so thankful for the experience and the opportunity they had been given to not only attend, but Slay prom 2017!

Studio 21 Salon is located at 830 Mayfield Rd #580 in Grand Prairie, Tx (across the street from the new IKEA)! We are a full service hair salon (including natural hair and loc maintenence), makeup, photography and videography. For inquires call 972-264-2600 or visit us online at www.s21salon.co

The Experience – Studio 21 Salon!

Eight months ago I attended a makeup class at what I like to call a “hidden gem” of a salon.   When I arrived at the location I was a little confused, because the name of the establishment and what I’d looked up online listed a hair salon. But when I got there and walked through the doors, a beauty baby grand piano greeted me in the foyer, and  a textured wooden wall served as the backdrop. It felt classy and rich. I walked through to a waiting area, the decor had changed. Black walls, crisp, clean white walls. Still rich, but the vibe was more street- around the way. A little past there was a transitional type space. The walls were still black, but there was also a rippled tin wall, and it took all of about 5 minutes before I realize that there was a mural painted on a wall in a street art fashion. My final destination was clearly a photography studio. One side of the room was white. The other side had a stage, and another wooden textured wall accented with elegant mirror art. “I’m here for a makeup class, but I need to find out more about this place!”

Studio 21 Salon is a salon like no other- that I have experienced.

Located in Grand Prairie, TX, the 4,500 square-foot facility is equipped with a full service salon: 4 stylists, a loctician, braider, threader. The salon also houses a full service makeup studio, professional makeup artists, photography and videography studio, and media team.

The inspiration  and concept of Salon21 was curated by the owners, brother and sister, Jerrod Collins and Amiya Cleveland.

“Part of the inspiration was filling a gap that was there, and loving photo shoots! My brother, Jerrod is an amazing designer. He put everything together. It looked really nice and brought class to the table.” Amiya explains, “You can go from a ‘walk-in’ to having a photo shoot. But, you know that. You’re a model.”

I don’t consider myself a model, but I have thoroughly enjoyed “the experience” of hair, makeup, and a photoshoot at the salon.  Since attending the makeup class in August of 2016,  Studio 21 has become my go-to! I frequent the salon as a walk-in for wax and threading services. I also love that Studio 21 offers a full list of natural hair care services, loc maintenance and styling. I’ve had my locs styled, and my daughter has  her natural hair treated and styled as well.

The lights, studio chairs, and ambiance of the makeup studio make me feel like a star.

I just sit back and let the magic happen.  Amiya ‘The Face Beata’ slays and is always on point!  She’s done my makeup for events ranging from formals to concerts. Amiya did my makeup, and Studio 21 media did THIS photo shoot. She also did my makeup, and my hair was styled by Jerrod in the Rouge issue of Honey Be Natural magazine.

Graduation season is vastly approaching and prom season is now.  This can be a stressful time for students and parents scheduling hair appointments, makeup appointments, buying a dress, tux or outfits. You want to have photos to commemorate all of it. Studio 21 gives you the option to come get your hair and makeup done, then have a photo shoot all in one stop! “We have lots of options, so people can come in, get taken care of. You can even get dressed here and leave for prom from here! ” -Amiya Cleveland
