Makeup and Beyond -A Chat With Celebrity MUA Frederick ‘Fred4Face’ Saunders

“I love every aspect of being a makeup artist, even the clients with bad attitudes. There is nothing that I would rather do. I feel like I wake up and breath makeup.” -Frederick Sanders

@Fred4Face

There aren’t many people who can honestly say, “I love what I do,” but there are a few and celebrity MUA, Frederick Sanders is one of them. His looks have graced red carpets, album and magazine covers, and been seen center stage on host of celebrities; Regina Hall, Shirley Cesar, MC Lyte, The Clark Sisters, Robyn Dixon, Avery Sunshine and Tamela Mann to name a few and is known for his “anointed hands.” I caught up and spoke to Sanders about who he is on a personal level, his career as a makeup artist  and what the future holds for “Fred4Face“.

On a typically warm, fall night in Dallas at the swanky Design District apartment skyrise clubhouse amoungst outstanding views while enjoying the sounds of DJ Luqwon, I had the pleasure of watching Saunders work his magic on “The Chain Breaker” herself, Speaker, Author and Philanthropist, Dr. Catrina Pullum.

“I’m the guy that’s behind the scenes. People know my work and name, but not necessarily my face,” he explains as he enters the clubhouse modestly, charmed and flattered that the Concierge recognized him on sight and greeted him with excitement. Seems like he’d  set up and was ready to roll by the time he finished that sentence.

SheBatty: I read that you were preparing for law school and walked into MAC and got hired on the spot.

Fred Saunders: “This is true, this is true.”

So have you always been artistic or were you practicing makeup at that time, or do you just have it?

“I’d like to think that I just have it. However, I did grow up being the only boy in a house full of sisters. So I think it just kind of fell on me -I inherited it, if you will, I was the youngest and the only boy. Seeing my great-grandmother, my grandmother, my mother and all of my sisters, you know, it kind of helped along. But I’d never had any desires to be a makeup artist.

I was always artistic. Years ago, as a child, I thought I wanted to be a fashion designer. I would draw clothes and -you know, really try to sketch things out, then I moved to being a cartoonist. So, I feel like -I’d like to say I did have the artistic side, I just never knew that I would develop it as a makeup artist.”

Those things sound so far from lawyer, but I guess we’re all multi-faceted. Did you know that makeup was your calling upon being hired at MAC?

“It was after, at that moment it was just a summer job for me. I was a school teacher, so my summers were free and I wanted to do something fun that I could do and not have to think about, and I gathered that it would just be something fun -you know, something I would just kind of learn and leave behind or maybe something I could do on the side. I never envisioned being a full fledged artist.”

Now that you are an artist, what do you love about it?

“I love every aspect of being a makeup artist, even the clients with bad attitudes — there is nothing that I would rather do. I feel like I wake up and breath makeup.”

PC: @Fred4Face

What’s your favorite bold looks that you’ve created or the most fun?

“The most fun bold look….that would have to be on one of my clients    who was very conservative, she did not really allow me to step out of the  box, but I just kind of like –really, just kind of did my own thing one day.  And it ended up being a cover shoot for a CD. And the CD picture went  viral.”

PC: @Fred4Face

You are great at creating classic red carpet looks. Do you like to step outside of that and do bold looks?

“Absolutely! I’ve done everything from fashion makeup, to red carpet beauty makeup, to body painting to face painting for halloween. I’ve even gone as far as to do female impersonators, so it’s really like a big circle.”

You just told me that you had a client who was conservative, and you had a little fun and it worked. Do you often do that -play up looks and have fun?

PC: @shebatty

I often do what I want -to be honest. And I hope none of my clients see this. I let them tell me what they believe they want, and I take their idea and make it my own. So, if somebody tells me, ‘I just want like, six colors on my eye.’ And I know that you’re not patient enough for me to put six colors on your eye and blend them down, then what I’ll do is i’ll do a simulation of what you want. And you might believe that you have six colors, but at the end of the day it may only be two. And that’s just real, because a lot of times I feel like most clients sit in the chair and tell you what they think they want, but then when they actually figure out what they really want, they’re like, ‘Oh, that’s not what I wanted.’ So to save myself some time, and save them a headache -you know, let me just combine the two.”

What’s your go to brand?

“My go to brand is actually Temptu, believe it or not. I do have a lot of things that I use. I can’t say that I use a certain foundation or a certain concealer, because I generally just use whatever I can find a good match with for color and whatever just works in my bag.”

What’s your go to budget brand?

“My go to budget brand…I’m actually enjoying, believe it or not, Kiss Cosmetics Professional and you can find that in the beauty supply store. They have some great longwear lipsticks and they have some great brow pencils -I’m actually using a brow pencil right now by Kiss Cosmetics.”

What’s the one product that we can always find in your bag?

“One product that you can always find in my bag, is my Temptu Airbrush Machine. That is my must-have. I travel with it everywhere I go. I find that when I’m working with gentlemen, they prefer the airbrush, because it doesn’t give you that makeupy [sic] look. But it’s still nice and natural enough that they can walk outside and nobody would be like ‘Oh my gosh, are you wearing makeup?’ so, that’s my must have.”

PC: @shebatty

What advice would you give aspiring MUAs?

“Be able to listen, be able to learn and never stop learning. Even at my age now and the number of years I have under my belt as a makeup artist, I’m still open to learning new things. So, always be open to learning new things.”

How do you feel social media has affected the industry?

“Social Media has definitely impacted the industry in so many different ways. I think it’s more so negatively, because there are so many people who feel like because they have two brushes and a pencil, they can say, “I”m a makeup artist” because they know how to draw their brows on. However, not necessarily knowing the art behind it, where you actually have to put in some work and understand, like other peoples skin types and other peoples structures and things of that nature.”

fred beyond the makeup

PC: @Fred4Face

Who are you beyond the makeup?

“Beyond the makeup….I am a mentor, I am a father, I am a friend, I’m a brother. I’m a Dillard [University] grad -hello!  I speak three languages: Spanish, French and German. I was a foreign language major in college most people don’t know that about me and that’s pretty much a fun fact.”

What are your plans for 2018?

“I’m taking bigger faith walks. I’m actually stepping out of my box and trying to do something on a bigger level. Somethings that I never thought that I would even dream of accomplishing. Stepping out on the waters a little bit.

Always be on the lookout for me. Cause if you sleep on me you’re gonna look up and be like ‘Oh, he’s up there!”

Simple Autumn Glow

Fall is my favorite season. I love everything about it, from crisp air, to chilled breezes, to snuggling up with my boo next to a fire, to wrapping up in a plush blanket with a book and let my imagination run wild. Another thing that I love about Fall is the fashion, swraters, turtle necks, pea coats, booties, boots, gloves, hat and scarves all excite me! I love the breathtaking  mixture of rich orange, red and brown tones that the tree paint the sky with during Fall. I love Fall trend makeup as well!

Today’s simple Autumn Glow look with a burnt orange lip is affordable and easy to recreate.

  • Foundation: NYX Total Control Liquid Foundation (Cappuccino)

My Experience At The Makeup Show Dallas!

For the past two years I’ve wanted to attend the Makeup Show in Dallas, but, without any industry credentials, I couldn’t even pay my way into the show! [Insert 2017] I made it to The Makeup Show Dallas and my experience was utterly amazing!

The show itself is the “ha-ha,” providing a wealth of information,  resources for makeup artists and beauty industry professionals in every city it hits. The line up for this year’s show included some industry heavy hitters. I was able to meet and speak with a few one on one (screams and faints), and others I was able to experience through their Keynote and Business Forum platforms. Brands ranged from up and coming, and local, to world renowned.

I was especially happy to be in attendance this year after learning from the show’s Director, James Vincent, that Texas is one of the best areas in the world for salon and spa services, and that this year the show focused on brands known for diversity and inclusion. And if you know me, then you know that basically,

Same Fine and the Basics of Beauty

I attended the show both days, and was able to sit in on part of Keynote, Sam Fine’s session on the Basics of Beauty on Saturday. He shared a wealth of information with us, and  since I’m not stingy, I’ll share a few tips that stood out for me.

  • To insure that your product doesn’t settle into fine lines. For eyes, look up and gently pull down or expand the skin under the eyes. For fine lines around the mouth, press your lips together and blow. This causes the skin around the mouth to expand and you’ll be able to buff the product out accordingly.
  • Shimmer eye shadow and women of a certain age. Because the skin becomes more textured the older we get, it’s best to play up the brows and lips to add pop to the look versus using shimmer eye shadow.

Danessa Myrick’s Vision Cream Foundation!

One of the busiest booths on the floor was Danessa Myricks’. Every time I walked by or looked, over there was a mob of people rushing the counter. I avoided the crowd for as long as I could, but I’ve had my eye on her Vision Cream Foundation and couldn’t leave the show without it. So when I saw a window of opportunity I took it, and ended up being second in line to be matched for foundation (winning)! The foundation is full-coverage and long wearing, I was matched with the shade W05. Shop Vision Cream Foundation at www.danessamyricksbeauty.com.

AJ Crimson’s Lipsticks!

I also purchased two lipstick shades from AJ Crimson. I purchased the S+M Sultry and Matte, Matte Liquid Lipstick in Keep It Cute. I also purchased the S+M Sultry and Matte, Metallic Lip Gloss in Coinz. I love the metallic orange/gold magic they make when paired. Find the entire collection at www.ajcrimson.com.

Terri Tomlinson’s Flesh Toned Color Wheel!

I have always struggle with finding my foundation match, and knowing what colors to put together that compliment my skin tone. I have cool and warm under tones. I’m cooler in the winter and warmer in the summer. Trust me, finding my best match is a struggle. Thanks to Terri Tomlinson and the Flesh Toned Color Wheel I will struggle no more! Terri launched her Flesh Toned Color Wheel this summer and is a great investment! Color theory is taught with primary colors, the actual colors. We all know skin color is not actual color. White skin is not the color white. having cool, warm, olive under tones do not translate as cut and dry as looking at colors on a piece of paper.  The Flesh Toned Color Wheel take color theory using true flesh tone color as a base. 3 Things I Love About NYX Cosmetics

NYX Cosmetics has rose in the ranks of beauty brands in this multi-million dollar cosmetic industry. The brand that was once notoriously known as a beauty supply brand can still be found in those places, but you can also find it in drugstores, big box stores, specialty stores and malls worldwide. I attended the recent opening of NYX Cosmetics store in Dallas’  NorthPark Center Mall. Being inside that store is like being in candy land, the options are limitless! I can confidently put on  NYX products in the morning with a full day planned,  knowing my makeup will still look decent a the end of the day.  The look shown above lasted for more than six hours of wear.  One of my favorite products that NYX has out right now is the Duo Chromatic Illuminating Powder. Girl! That powder shines so bright, you could send light signals off your cheek reflections! Synthetica is a must have!

It’s for Everyone!

Whatever look you’re going for, NYX has you covered. Their lippies and eye shadows range in colors that are  a theater majors dream! What NYX products do you have in hour collection and what are your favorites?

My Frenzy For Fenty

Fenty Beauty by Rihanna launched at the stroke of midnight on Friday, September 8th and is all the rage (see my immediate reaction below)! Fenty Beauty is EVERYWHERE, but does the brand really measure up? There was no way I was willing to let this product sell out before I got my hands on it, so I skipped lunch on Friday and clawed my way through the crowd at Sephora. I even had to go back Saturday, with my children in tow. But I got it, and spent my entire weekend dancing and romancing with this collection to get the deets.

The line features Fenty Beauty by Rihanna: Pro Filt’r Matte Longwear Foundation in forty (40) brown-girl and pale-girl inclusive shades, Gloss Bomb Universal Lip Luminizer, Pro Filt’r Instant Retouch Primer, four (4) Match Stix Trio sets, twenty (20) Match Stix Matte Skinsticks, six (6) Killawatt Freestyle Highlighter, ten (10) Match Stix Shimmeer Shinsticks, Invisimatte Blotting Powder, Invisimatte Blotting Paper and refills, a Full-bodied Foundation Brush, three (3) Portable Brushes, and a Precision Makeup Sponge.  All available exclusively at Sephora.

My undertones are a mix of cool and warm, and I have a hard time finding foundations that match; so hearing Rih-Rih boast about how brown-girl friendly her shade range is definitely piqued my interest. After seeing her on the red carpet for the premier of Fenty in Oscar de la Renta solidified the fact that I would definitely be purchasing a highlight; my girl had glow for days!

The foundation shades did not disappoint, and I was pretty impressed with finding my match on the third swatch. I’ve been wearing it for the past three days, and the formula is beyond light and airy. I purposely packed it on once, and it still felt like I wasn’t wearing any. It’s a buildable, medium coverage, soft matte formula, but not drying. It’s also longwearing and will last through a full days work.

The Match Stix Trios are pre-packaged to take the guess work out of finding your conceal and contour shade. I needed Deep, the darkest set they have, so if you’re any darker than me, you’ll want a customized set. The pigment is great, and they are easy to apply and blend out. The Match Stixs are also light and airy as well.

But girl, what you will need in your collection, hands down, is a KILLAWATT Freestyle Highlighter! I promise you they had to have been in the lab blasting “Shine Bright Like a Diamond” from start to finish while formulating these. Trophy Wife is simply insane. So insane that I honestly can’t think of a better use for it than to perch myself atop a plush chaise, naked, with my entire body dusted in its glittery gold glow, with a red lip and some stilettos, patiently awaiting the mister. However, in all seriousness, you can’t go wrong with any of them, the pigment is intense.

Fenty beauty swiftly earned a spot in my daily use collection. My homegirl (in my head) Rih Rih came through, and I’m anxiously and eagerly anticipating the expansion of this brand! See my three face by Fenty pics below.

Day 1: With a full day planned, I moisturized heavily (because of dry skin) and packed on the product. The foundation looks like skin and the additional moisturizing steps taken in combination with it provided a beautiful and luminous glow.

Day 2: Not as long of a day as day one. I needed to be cute for a couple of hours. This look was created with my normal skin prep routine without any additional hydrating steps, with not as much product.

Day 3: The real functionality test, wearing the product to work with a white shirt! I didn’t use much product this day. But, as you can see, the foundation did last all day. I won’t even call the product you see on my shirt transfer, because it only came off on the areas of the shirt that actually rubbed against my face.

Makeup Mixer with Glamour Rx

Glamour RX kicked off an Initial Introductory series, where its founder, and celebrity MUA, Bridgette Washington is personally conducting makeup classes with small, intimate groups  in the Dallas/Froth Worth Metroplex.

Let me start off by saying, “I’m sold!” I’m on a mission to lessening the toxins in my beauty routine, and Glamour RX  is a win-win for me. Not only is brand black owned and brown girl friendly, the products are made with consideration of our well-being, and Bridgette is passionate about providing a product that is healthy to wear daily. “We’ve sourced the best!”  Glamour RX foundation is zinc based, made with no fillers, has concentrated silk amino acids, and sourced minerals from around the world.

makeup monday

Monday night’s Makeup Mixer was hosted by Donisha Reed of Love-N-Hair, in Garland, TX, where ladies learned 10 steps for a fresh everyday look in 10 minutes.

Bare-faced, and armed with makeup bags and hand mirrors, everyone was ready to learn and play in makeup. Skill levels ranged from novice to advanced, and by the end of the night everyone had leveled up and walked out beaming, with a new attitude.

10-in-10

Skin prep, conceal, foundation, brows, blush, highlight, shadow, mascara, lips, and set! Bridgette provided individual, hands-on instructions and techniques to each attendee. She explained the different functions of liquid and cream foundations in comparison to Glamour Rx’s mineral foundation. She also demonstrated how to use different carrier’s such as water, setting spray, and lotion with the the mineral foundation. The ladies even had the opportunity to try new products that have yet to launch!

I’m not one to gossip, but keep your ears to street about Glamour Rx’s new primer and eyeshadow/highlighter pots. Just pre-order all of it when you can, you won’t be sorry!

Bridgette demo’d covering hyperpigmentation, redness, and acne scarring with Glamour RX Mineral Foundation using a variety of application methods. She also explained and demonstrated how to skip concealer and use the foundation for under eye coverage, and answered a host of questions down to cleaning brushes.

Girls Night!

There was no way the ladies were going to let their fabulous faces go to waste, and by the end of the night, the Makeup Mixer shifted to a Girls Night Out. A few of the women came in as non-makeup wearers. They strutted off rocking a full face (including lashes), with newly purchased Glamour Rx, and the knowledge and tools needed to recreate their look over and over again.

Follow Glamour Rx for product updates, and celebrity MUA, Bridgette Washington for upcoming makeup events near you!

My Top 5 Beauty Influencers

Beauty is in the eye of the be-blah…blah…blah…blah! It’s 2017, and beauty is whatever you want it to be. You like what you like and I like what I like. That doesn’t make either of us wrong, just different.  I’ve listed the top five influencer that I draw inspiration from.

Jackie Aina

Need I say more? Jackie Aina is one the first YouTube beauty influencers to captivate my attention. If you’re a brown skinned girl, you cannot go wrong with the information she provides in her videos. She’s real and I like how she’s not afraid to get these brands together for overlooking anything darker than caramel complexions. I also love that she continuously promotes her blackness and is damn proud of it – and I just can’t get enough of her and Denise!

Alissa Ashley

Alissa has dry skin, like me, and she also has hooded lids, like me. She is my go to for techniques, tips and tricks fin those areas. If you have hooded lids, then you know the struggles of eyeshadow application. I love her Mystery Makeup Monday’s, where she uses a spinning  wheel to determine her look for the day. I’m amazed at how she always pulls the looks off!

Khloe Dosh

We aren’t going to talk about how many Khloe Dosh Snapchat tutorials I’ve sat through, and will continue to sit through. I like Khloe because she hasn’t forgotten about those of us who are still in the learning/struggle stages of our love for makeup. She features artists on her Snapchat from all skill levels, and you will not talk crazy to people who take over her page that aren’t the best. She’s creative, and I actually get mad at the people who come for her when she makes her makeover tutorials with creative tools. Don’t come for Khloe on my watch -NOT ON MY WATCH!

Makeupshayla

So yeah, Shayla slays, and she plays really good music when she’s working out.  I love to watching her snaps. It’s nice to see a beauty influencer kick-ass in the gym, then go home and slay-it. She’s also gorgeous!

TheSocialiteLife

I stuumbled upon Sande maybe a year or so ago while  desperately researching a particular foundation  I wanted to try. Sande is my jam, and if you don’t mind an F-bomb here and there, she’ll be yours too. Her product reviews are honest, raw and funny!

The 2017 Extreme Prom Makeover Experience – Studio 21 Salon!

Every girl deserves a day to feel like a princess. To be made the center of attention. To sit in all anxiousness as the curling wands spin and the powder puffs, digesting the sound wisps, ticks and clicks of the magic that happens in those very moments. 10 all-deserving, scintillating young women won an extreme prom makeover for their Senior Prom, sponsored by Project 16 DFW, Studio 21 Salons, and Lil Lizzie’s Foundation.

Terrific Two

Studio 21 is celebrating their two-year anniversary this year, and the series of events is nothing less than “You Should Be Here!” In proper order, the salon kicked off the chain of events by giving back, partnering with Project 16 and Lil Lizzie’s Foundation to make a dream come true for 10 high school seniors by providing hair, makeup, and a photoshoot for prom! We are bringing you a behind the scenes look at day that will go down as no less than a day dreams are made of for Ivory, Dominique, Nayeli, Nautica, Ajah, Aaliyah, Tamya, I’yonna, and Jasaja.

Anticipation filled the room as early as 8am as the girls arrived and things started rolling.

There were side conversations going on, music playing in the background, and refreshments to boot. Coffee was the cocktail of the hour in the preparation for the day’s events, and  organization and teamwork played a major role in the success of this project. The plan was in place, stations were set and the team showed up READY!

Hair

The girls preselected their styles on their shopping day,so the curling irons were hot  and the stylist best equipped to curate their requests were assigned to them. Robin “Honey” George @honeygeorgehair, Felicia “Marcel Queen” Green @texastylistfeliciagreen, and Phylice “Lady Silk” Teamer @anointedhands25 chopped and whirled those tresses into bouncing, flowing, exotic slays.

For the Love of Honey!
Marcel Queen in the building!
Lady Silk, need I say more?

Makeup

The makeup artists marched in focused with their makeup kits in tow.Watching them set up made me feel like a unicorn in fairy tale land. The girls were encouraged to “go for it!”, and no games were played. Amiya @studio21mua, Joanna @fernormfaces, Valerie @lipstickcurlsstudio, and Fai @faschion.makeup painted and served face, hunty!

Mother Jade

Project 16 is clearly Lady Jade’s @ladyjade104 baby. She set it out for those babies, y’all! No detail was untouched. Lil Lizzies provided the beautiful gowns, shoes and accessories that adorned each girl. The young ladies were able to pick their looks from head to toe. I’m not sure if there is any sequin or sparkle left in DFW, cause this even was blinged out! DJ Khaled’s Shining comes to mind when I think of it all.

The creating the set

Once hair and makeup were done and the girls were dressed, it was time for one of the most anticipated parts of the day, the photo shoot! Let me start by saying that this fabulous backdrop was made, byhand, by Alyson Collins. She inflated every balloon, then strategically placed them along the wall like a cascading ray of sunshine and lollipops. I seriously wanted to go home, put on a sparkly gown and come back for my own photo op.

Lights, camera, action!

Studio 21 Media is a force to be reckoned with! Behind the scene photos were taken by John Carter @jcvision_video, and there were three photo stations set; a headshot station with photos by Tydus Cleveland @obey_tytuswayne, the glam spot with photos by Daniel Wheat @d_wheat and outside photos by William Washington @extremeworksstudio. Talk about loving your craft and getting the shot! The best part was seeing them encourage one another and admiring each others shots.

The event came to a close with all the girls center stage, jamming out to a group photo shot. The room was full of love, smiles, and  tears of joy. The girls were so thankful for the experience and the opportunity they had been given to not only attend, but Slay prom 2017!

Studio 21 Salon is located at 830 Mayfield Rd #580 in Grand Prairie, Tx (across the street from the new IKEA)! We are a full service hair salon (including natural hair and loc maintenence), makeup, photography and videography. For inquires call 972-264-2600 or visit us online at www.s21salon.co

The Experience – Studio 21 Salon!

Eight months ago I attended a makeup class at what I like to call a “hidden gem” of a salon.   When I arrived at the location I was a little confused, because the name of the establishment and what I’d looked up online listed a hair salon. But when I got there and walked through the doors, a beauty baby grand piano greeted me in the foyer, and  a textured wooden wall served as the backdrop. It felt classy and rich. I walked through to a waiting area, the decor had changed. Black walls, crisp, clean white walls. Still rich, but the vibe was more street- around the way. A little past there was a transitional type space. The walls were still black, but there was also a rippled tin wall, and it took all of about 5 minutes before I realize that there was a mural painted on a wall in a street art fashion. My final destination was clearly a photography studio. One side of the room was white. The other side had a stage, and another wooden textured wall accented with elegant mirror art. “I’m here for a makeup class, but I need to find out more about this place!”

Studio 21 Salon is a salon like no other- that I have experienced.

Located in Grand Prairie, TX, the 4,500 square-foot facility is equipped with a full service salon: 4 stylists, a loctician, braider, threader. The salon also houses a full service makeup studio, professional makeup artists, photography and videography studio, and media team.

The inspiration  and concept of Salon21 was curated by the owners, brother and sister, Jerrod Collins and Amiya Cleveland.

“Part of the inspiration was filling a gap that was there, and loving photo shoots! My brother, Jerrod is an amazing designer. He put everything together. It looked really nice and brought class to the table.” Amiya explains, “You can go from a ‘walk-in’ to having a photo shoot. But, you know that. You’re a model.”

I don’t consider myself a model, but I have thoroughly enjoyed “the experience” of hair, makeup, and a photoshoot at the salon.  Since attending the makeup class in August of 2016,  Studio 21 has become my go-to! I frequent the salon as a walk-in for wax and threading services. I also love that Studio 21 offers a full list of natural hair care services, loc maintenance and styling. I’ve had my locs styled, and my daughter has  her natural hair treated and styled as well.

The lights, studio chairs, and ambiance of the makeup studio make me feel like a star.

I just sit back and let the magic happen.  Amiya ‘The Face Beata’ slays and is always on point!  She’s done my makeup for events ranging from formals to concerts. Amiya did my makeup, and Studio 21 media did THIS photo shoot. She also did my makeup, and my hair was styled by Jerrod in the Rouge issue of Honey Be Natural magazine.

Graduation season is vastly approaching and prom season is now.  This can be a stressful time for students and parents scheduling hair appointments, makeup appointments, buying a dress, tux or outfits. You want to have photos to commemorate all of it. Studio 21 gives you the option to come get your hair and makeup done, then have a photo shoot all in one stop! “We have lots of options, so people can come in, get taken care of. You can even get dressed here and leave for prom from here! ” -Amiya Cleveland
